It was built by the building firm\u00a0Beardwood at a cost of \u00a311,000. It comprised a centre block\u00a0(three windows wide) with adjoining four window wide\u00a0wings on each side.The Builder a professional journal\u00a0published in 1857 describes the plan of the building as:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;An elongated parallelogram having a centre projection\u00a0beyond the limits of the wings at front and rear appropriated\u00a0to the use of the &#8216;Christian Brothers&#8217;. In the wings which are\u00a0connected to the centre by corridors, having glass doors\u00a0are contained the schools chapel refectory dormitories,\u00a0playroom kitchen, staircase and interior offices&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The five acre lands of St. Joseph&#8217;s School were formerly part\u00a0of over 94 acres of Cabragh property owned by the Segrave\u00a0Family, dating back to the mid-seventeenth century. Thanks\u00a0to the great efforts of Fr. Mc Namara C.M. (Member of\u00a0Catholic Institute for the Deaf), a lease forever was secured\u00a0from the landlord Captain ONeill Segrave for the school.\u00a0Br. J.S. Galvin of St. losephs school wrote an interesting\u00a0history of the Cabragh district which can be read in the<br \/>\nCentenary Record 1857-1957 of St. Joseph&#8217;s School.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several reports were published in &#8216;The Builder&#8217; highlighting\u00a0the building-works being carried out on the site of St.\u00a0Joseph&#8217;s School e.g.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8216;The building is ofgothic Tudor style erected of rubble,\u00a0masonry limestone pebbledashed having the quoins\u00a0cornices windowdressings etc of red bricks from Wexford\u00a0and windowsills corbels, gable crosses copings, etc of\u00a0County Dublin granite..&#8217;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1869 the east wing of the main building was built\u00a0comprising the refectory and chapel at a total cost of\u00a0\u00a35,000. Later additions took place in the 1870s including\u00a0the imposing west wing which housed an assembly\u00a0hall\/school-room. The school room being 154 feet long by\u00a040 feet wide was described as: &#8220;One of the finest halls in\u00a0the British isles at that time, appropriated to educational\u00a0purposes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also the grounds around the building were improved and\u00a0extensively landscaped. Other extensions and renovations\u00a0took place over the years. These included the Front Lodge\u00a0and Model farmyard buildings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Major alterations\/renovations were carried out to the\u00a0building around 1934\/5. They included a new intermediate\u00a0floor-level in the west wing consisting of new classrooms\u00a0(see relevant drawing-plans). ln the midseventies a new\u00a0school building was built opposite the old Infirmary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ln the mideighties the famed old Navan Road entrance to\u00a0the school had with much sadness to be relocated to the\u00a0Ratoath Road to facilitate the ever busy volume\/movement\u00a0of traffic at Cabra Cross.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The original sedion of the four-storey building was\u00a0designed by Dublin archived Mr. Charles Geoghegan to\u00a0accommodate one hundred pupils (see relevant perspective\u00a0drawing\/painting).
